Holography of gravitational action functionals

چکیده
Einstein-Hilbert (EH) action can be separated into a bulk and a surface term, with a specific (‘‘holographic’’) relationship between the two, so that either can be used to extract information about the other. The surface term can also be interpreted as the entropy of the horizon in a wide class of spacetimes. Since EH action is likely to just the first term in the derivative expansion of an effective theory, it is interesting to ask whether these features continue to hold for more general gravitational actions. We provide a comprehensive analysis of Lagrangians of the form g p L g p QaRbcd, in which Qa is a tensor with the symmetries of the curvature tensor, made from metric and curvature tensor and satisfies the condition rcQa 0, and show that they share these features. The Lanczos-Lovelock Lagrangians are a subset of these in which Qa is a homogeneous function of the curvature tensor. They are all holographic, in a specific sense of the term, and—in all these cases—the surface term can be interpreted as the horizon entropy. The thermodynamics route to gravity, in which the field equations are interpreted as TdS dE pdV, seems to have a greater degree of validity than the field equations of Einstein gravity itself. The results suggest that the holographic feature of EH action could also serve as a new symmetry principle in constraining the semiclassical corrections to Einstein gravity. The implications are discussed.

Holography and total charge
We solve the variational problem associated with the total charge action on bounded domains in D = 2 background gravitational fields. The solutions of the field equations, stability and solitons are obtained holographically in terms of the massless spinning particles that evolve generating worldlines which play the role of boundaries. Moreover, we construct different background gravitational fi...
متن کاملUniversal Features of Holographic Anomalies ∗
We study the mechanism by which gravitational actions reproduce the trace anomalies of the holographically related conformal field theories. Two universal features emerge: a) the ratios of type B trace anomalies in any even dimension are independent of the gravitational action being uniquely determined by the underlying algebraic structure b) the normalization of the type A and the overall norm...
متن کاملHolography and Colliding gravitational shock waves in asymptotically AdS5 spacetime.
Using holography, we study the collision of planar shock waves in strongly coupled N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory. This requires the numerical solution of a dual gravitational initial value problem in asymptotically anti-de Sitter spacetime.
متن کاملTurbulence and Holography
We examine the interplay between recent advances in quantum gravity and the problem of turbulence. In particular, we argue that in the gravitational context the phenomenon of turbulence is intimately related to the properties of spacetime foam. In this framework we discuss the relation of turbulence and holography and the interpretation of the Kolmogorov scaling in the quantum gravitational set...
متن کاملStrings in homogeneous gravitational waves and null holography
Homogeneous gravitational wave backgrounds arise as infinite momentum limits of many geometries with a well-understood holographic description. General global aspects of these geometries are discussed. Using exact CFT techniques, strings in pp-wave backgrounds supported by a Neveu-Schwarz flux are quantized. As in Euclidean AdS3, spectral flow and associated long strings are shown to be crucial...
